Welcome to the Play School
The Play School Pre-K Learning Center is a state-licensed, non-profit
organization sponsored by St. John’s Church. For more than 40
years, the Center has been providing a non-religious, comprehensive
playschool experience to North Haven children as a service to the community.
Its success in preparing children for entry into local elementary schools
is well recognized by area teachers.
Several Play School programs are offered to enable children of different
ages to develop physical, social and mental skills in a loving and
nurturing environment. These programs include both full- and half-day
options on a two- or three-day-per-week basis. All programs are learning
center oriented, focusing around a series of specialized learning stations
through which the children rotate during the school day. Children move
from center to center using directed play and carefully planned activities
to explore learning opportunities involving books, puzzles, art, music
and other materials. Time is also devoted to projects and physical
activities that develop motor skills and social interaction.
An experienced, dedicated staff and first-rate facilities make the
Play School Pre-K Learning Center an enriching growth experience for
the children who attend. The personal attention devoted to each child
and the emphasis on learning through play ensure that learning is viewed
as an enjoyable activity. The program is designed to help each child
realize his or her full potential. For further information about the
Play School, please call the Director, Corrine Jermine. We encourage
you to schedule a visit to see our program in action. Ongoing enrollment
for limited class openings is available for the current school year.
Programs/Schedule

Both the full- and half-day programs offered by the Play School use
a learning-center approach to expose children to a variety of
learning experiences. These include:
- construction/transportation center
- book/puzzle center
- art center
- family life center
- math/science/nature center
As children are guided through each center, active experimentation,
expression and language development are encouraged. During this
learning time, children also may be separated into small groups for
a craft project in a classroom; brought into the kitchen for a
cooking project; or engaged one-on-one with a teacher for specific
skill development.
The program schedule offered for three-year-olds is:
- Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 8:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
- Option to stay for lunch until 12:30
Programs offered for four- and five-year-olds
are:
- Monday, Wednesday, Friday mornings, 8:45 a.m. – 11:45
a.m.
- Monday, Wednesday, Friday afternoons, 12:30 p.m. – 3:15
p.m.
- Both mornings and afternoons include an extended lunchtime option,
11:45 – 12:30
- Monday, Wednesday, Friday full day, 8:45 a.m. – 3:15
p.m.
Facilities
The
Play School has excellent physical facilities, including fully equipped
classrooms designed for early childhood learning,
multiple lavatories, a full kitchen and large play areas both indoors
and outdoors. Indoors, the Great Hall is furnished with a wooden play
gym, a slide, a balance beam, hoops, bicycles and other toys to help
gross motor skill development. It also offers extensive open space
to accommodate all of the children in carefully supervised free play.
Outdoors, the playground is covered with shock-absorbent material under
the swings and playscape; and includes two play houses, a castle and
a large sandbox. A feature that parents appreciate is the adjacent
parking lot for safe, convenient drop-off and pick-up right at the
Play School door
