Helping Our Local Community

Angel Tree – Every Christmas, we buy and wrap Christmas presents for children whose parents are in prison. We then deliver them on behalf of the parent who cannot provide presents for their children.

Brotherhood of St. Andrew – This is a men’s group focusing on service, study and prayer. It is Outreachopen to all male Episcopalians.

Cook and Care Walk-A-Thon – Many at St. John’s have solicited sponsors and walked to support the worthy programs of Faith in Action.

Habitat for Humanity – Members of St. John’s help build and rehabilitate houses in the New Haven region through the local affiliate of this nationwide organization.

Martha Ministry – These volunteers serve occasional meals to temporarily home-bound parishioners. They also coordinate and serve at receptions for parishioners and non-parishioners alike, following funerals.

Midnight Run – Individuals and church groups from area towns collect clothing and purchase food to distribute on the New Haven Green and to a men’s and women’s shelter.

Ministries of St. Paul and St. James Episcopal Church – Members of St. John’s support the Loaves and Fishes Food Closet that provides groceries for the working poor and unemployed in New Haven. Light and Peace: Members of St. John’s participate by periodically providing the meal for the children’s evening worship service and participating in the service.

OutreachNorth Haven Holiday Food Drive – The North Haven Food Pantry is sponsored by the churches of North Haven. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Food Council, with representatives from St. John’s, conducts food drives and delivers boxes of groceries and a turkey to 70 needy families in North Haven.

North Haven Organization for Affordable Housing – NHOAH is a corporation formed by nine local congregations and is dedicated to providing affordable housing in North Haven. Two representatives from St. John’s are on the Board of Directors. NHOAH has built a condominium unit which is fully occupied; is working with the new residents to govern and maintain the units; and is seeking new projects.

St. John’s Baby and Toddler Playgroup – This program provides an opportunity for mothers and other caregivers of toddlers to find fellowship and support on Tuesday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Both parishioners and non-parishioners are invited to participate in this program.

Stephen Ministers – These trained lay ministers are caregivers who listen to and support people in need of one-on-one attention. They often work with those suffering from an illness and with those who are home-bound.

Reaching Out to the Worldwide Community

Knitting & Crocheting Group – Members from the St. John's community knit and crochet warm hats, scarves and mittens for the children of the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota and other organizations that serve those in need.

Episcopal Relief and Development – When natural and environmental disasters strike in the USA and in other parts of the world, St. John’s often collects money to contribute to the relief efforts of the Episcopal Church.

Operation Christmas Child – Members of St. John’s fill shoe boxes with toys and treats; then Samaritan’s Purse distributes these boxes to needy children in 95 countries.

30 Hour Famine – Youth group members and their friends raise money through donors and sponsors to help children in some of the world's poorest countries. The groups then go 30 hours without food, so that they can have a real taste of what hunger is like.
